Welcome to Quantock Harriers!
We believe that everyone should enjoy running in the wider community and want to encourage as many people as we can. Your membership of the Quantock Harriers helps to facilitate that. We pride ourselves on being a friendly, open and inclusive club that welcomes people from all stages of their running career no matter what their ability or experience!
We are affiliated to England Athletics and are a member of the county structure. Although we have some faster runners and encourage the improvement of our members running performances, it is not the sole purpose of our club and welcome all types of runner from absolute beginner to the more experienced, male or female.
The minimum joining age is 18.
There are now two types of membership available, affiliated or non-affiliated. You can choose whether you want to be affiliated with English Athletics (EA) or not. Runners who are affiliated with EA are usually able to claim reduced entry on many races in the UK. If you never enter any races but just want to be a member of the club choose the non-affiliated entry option. You can still enter races as a non-affiliated runner and you can still run in club kit, but you must not claim reduced entry.
Affiliated membership is £30 for the first year which includes a club vest and £20 per annum thereafter.
Non-affiliated membership is £10.

We meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm
The Tuesday runs are normally between five and seven miles and are typically aimed at more experienced runners that can run around five miles within an hour.
In the winter season the runs are from the YMCA in Bridgwater at 7PM and are run on the pavements around the town.
In the summer season the runs migrate to different starting points around the area and are a mix of road and trail runs. Please see HERE for details of the summer runs.
Thursdays Beginners and Returners Session
Many people are worried about joining a running club (we were all there once) and our Thursday night runs are normally from the YMCA in Bridgwater at 7pm. They are open to everyone, from those just starting out that need a little more encouragement in the initial stages of their running, to those returning from illness or injury. We do however encourage all abilities to attend no matter what their experience as we believe that the more experienced runner is of great help and incentive to those just starting out.
The group normally runs approximately 3 to 5 miles depending on ability but the routes chosen can be easily tailored to suit you.
The group is led by Level 2 coach Lindsey Haigh and supported by Level 1 run leader Catherine Timbrell.
**Whichever night you want to run with us, before we ask you to join, you are welcome to come along for a few weeks to see if you like us!**
Running can sometimes be a solitary affair and as a club we like to encourage our member to get together to moan about aches, pains and other ailments! They are on the first Friday of the month we meet up at a local pub, run then drink (although being runners the alcohol consumption is generally fairly disappointing!) These sessions are only held in the summer months as they are normally off road.
As a Club we are member of the Somerset Series, this is a selection of different races across the county throughout the year. As part of our commitment to the series we have a club race which is the first Sunday in July every year called “The Beast” which is an off road 5.5 mile course from Fyne Court. We need all the help that we can get to put it on and request that all members make themselves available on the day to marshal, if you would like to run the race instead of marshalling all you need to do is find someone to replace you.
All new members to the club get the choice of either a club technical t shirt or running vest. You can buy extra if required at a cost of £13.00 per vest or £15.00 per T-Shirt.
The benefits of joining our club
- Easier to run with others
- Meet people
- More motivation to improve your running
- Social evenings and post run drinks on most Thursdays
- Additional chances to get London Marathon entry (see below)
London Marathon Places
As a club affiliated to England athletics we are gifted additional London Marathon places.
These are hotly contested and over the years we have tried to ensure that they are allocated in as fair a way as humanly possible, which we acknowledge will never keep everyone happy but we have tried. The current criteria is:
- You must be an affiliated club member for more than 12 months
- You must have have entered the London marathon in that year and of failed to get in
- You must actively have given back to club such as of attending regularly and helping at the Quantock Beast
Places are drawn as part of a ballot and when we are allocated more than one entry we normally allocate one entry to those that have of never run London before of and the remaining entries are open to all.
We are blessed in that we have two local parkruns in Taunton and Burnham on Sea.
Slightly further afield we have Minehead, Tiverton and Montacute (Yeovil)
Parkrun is a timed free weekly 5K run on a Saturday morning at 9am. We regularly have runs at both the local ones and it would be great if you could of join them at some point.
We have a Facebook Page open to everyone, and also a closed Facebook Group “QH’s” for members only.
